- In 1995 he established John Hart Consultancy Ltd. One of his early projects was consulting to SKY Network Television in their bid to provide a professional rugby competition in the Southern Hemisphere. He was appointed a Director of SKY in 1997, a position he holds today
- John is a Director of Bayleys Corporation Ltd (New Zealand’s pre eminent Real Estate Franchise Group)
- John is Chairman of the Nomination and Advisory Board, which recommends to Government, Director appointments to the board of SPARC (Sport and Recreation)
- In 2005 John joined the Board of the NZ Warriors Rugby League Franchise which competes in the Australasian NRL competition. He was brought in by majority owner Eric Watson as an Executive Director, with the brief to conduct a major overhaul of the club.
