For his services to rugby, John was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queens Birthday honours in 1997.
John has published two best selling books; - Straight from the Hart and Change of Hart; the latter provides a first-hand account of the transition from amateur to professional rugby.
PROFESSIONAL CAREER:
John not only excelled in his rugby coaching career, he also made his mark in a professional capacity and is highly respected in both the sporting and corporate environments.
- John spent 30 years with Fletcher Challenge Limited, the last ten years as Group Employee Relations Director reporting to the Group Chief Executive. He was responsible for leading the development and co-ordination of the Human Resource function internationally which at its peak had 30,000 employees. During that time John oversaw in excess of 100 mergers, acquisitions, sales and closures of businesses. He retired in 1995.
