- An Assistant All Black Coach in 1987 with the inaugural World Cup winning team
- Coached the All Blacks on an unbeaten tour of Japan in 1987
- During 1989 and 1991 Coached the New Zealand Colts and New Zealand B team , both teams remained unbeaten during his tenure
- In 1995 appointed Convener of Selectors and All Black Coach. He held the role for 4 years winning the Tri Nations Series in 3 of the 4 years
- The first All Blacks Coach to win a series victory against The Springboks in South Africa in 1996
- As All Blacks Coach, his team lost only 1 of the 22 tests played during the 1996/1997 seasons. His 1997 All Black team remains the only unbeaten All Blacks side in two decades
- Coached the All Blacks to the semi-final of the Rugby World Cup in 1999 (also in 1991 as Co-Coach)
He announced his retirement in 1999, having achieved an outstanding 87% winning record in the 175 - 1st class matches he coached at provincial and national level.
